Increased Access for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing

Phil Bravin, the president-emeritus of the National Captioning Institute called Echo360 lecture capture a “…must-have technology to serve the deaf and hard of hearing student population as mandated by Section 508.” Rich media lectures created with Echo360 can play a crucial role in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. No longer forced to choose between watching an interpreter and taking notes, students simply replay captioned lectures to improve comprehension and keep up with class. At Educause, Echo360 announced a partnership with Automated Sync Technologies to provide for accurate, quick turnaround transcription and captioning in an integrated workflow. Using the EchoSystem to capture, record and publish lectures in conjunction with CaptionSync™ from Automatic Sync Technologies, the lectures are seamlessly captioned and synchronized with classroom visuals and video.

EchoSystem Version 2.4 Is Here!

The latest version of the EchoSystem includes automated closed captioning, publishing choice and a series of enhancements that improve performance and reliability in campus-wide deployments.

SEAMLESS CLOSED CAPTIONING

Serving students with disabilities is a priority for all institutions. Using built-in publishing profiles, the EchoSystem will automatically send audio files to AST for transcription and captioning.  When complete, the EchoSystem will ingest captions and apply to media for student access.

FLEXIBLE PUBLISHING OPTIONS

Using Echo360’s open publishing framework, institutions can customize lecture publishing to in-house course management systems, websites and portals. The open framework simplifies support for advanced publishing workflows like DVD burning for distance learning offerings and the application of closed captions with services outside Automated Sync mentioned above. And publishing to all Blackboard products, iTunes, Moodle and Angel is still included with every deployment.

ENHANCEMENTS FOR CAMPUS-WIDE DEPLOYMENTS

Smaller file sizes and faster time-to-web: By cutting file sizes 10-50%, version 2.4 cuts turnaround time without impacting quality. Perfect for high-volume classrooms recording back-to-back lectures throughout the day.
Smart capacity management:  Administrators can set lecture management policies system-wide, proactively resolving storage capacity issues by automatically deleting content.
Capture transparency on EchoSystem capture appliances: New capture diagnostics troubleshoot, upload and reboot appliances without requiring a physical visit to each classroom.
