Lecture Capture Solution Delivers Equal Accessibility with Closed Captioning and Section 508 Compliance
Dallas, TX, Educause (October 10, 2006) - Today Anystream announced that Gallaudet University, the nation’s leading institution for deaf and hard of hearing students, has equipped their student body with the ability to review lectures on demand with Apreso Classroom. The initiative has been praised by students and faculty as a way to improve comprehension and address the challenges faced by the 10 percent of freshmen who enter the university new to sign language each semester.
"We chose Apreso Classroom because Anystream was eager to work with us to develop superior closed captioning capabilities that guarantee our students the full benefits of video lecture capture,” said Gallaudet’s eLearning Manager Earl Parks. “Apreso’s closed captioning provides our new signers the invaluable opportunity to view video of their professors presenting course content paired with captions, ensuring the comprehension and retention of course materials while their sign language skills develop."
Apreso empowers Gallaudet students with the ability to revisit difficult course materials and concepts, better prepare for tests, or make-up for a missed class. Combined with robotic press-to-sign cameras that track between students and professors, Apreso automatically captures and preserves all signed classroom interactions unique to Gallaudet’s classroom experience.
"Accessibility is essential to serving higher education. Apreso’s closed captioning and Section 508 certification ensures that any student can reap the proven benefits of our technology," said Anystream VP of Education Products Mark Jones. "Apreso’s dedication to higher education prompted us to engage Gallaudet in the development of our closed captioning. We are thrilled to be working with such a prestigious institution."
Because Apreso Classroom is affordable enough to be deployed campus-wide, it is the leading lecture capture solution for higher education. Scheduled once at the beginning of a term, it automatically captures the classroom audio, video, and full-motion visual aids, and instantly publishes a rich media version of the lecture to university websites or course management systems - including Blackboard and WebCT. With Section 508 certified interfaces, supports for screen readers, and closed captions, Apreso Classroom makes rich media lectures a viable review tool for the entire student population.
