Cutting edge technology is helping to foster education in many ways, including assisting students (and faculty) with disabilities. Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act of 1998 requires institutions to eliminate barriers in information technology and to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities.
Gallaudet University, the leading university for deaf and hearing impaired undergraduate students, has been using some special applications of lecture capture system technology to help its students. These applications can be adopted by any institution that needs to meet 508 guidelines. For example, lecture capture video can record the instructor using American Sign Language. The recording can then be modified to add a transcript and/or closed-captions for hearing impaired students to facilitate for their review.
