Welcome from Our Host: The University of Birmingham
Presenters: A Kelly, Head of Learning Space Development; John Couperthwaite, Manager, Educational Technology Team
Description: Over the next decade, higher education institutions will confront unique challenges to their established models of teaching. The response of academic institutions worldwide to shifting learning patterns by students will define their medium and long term futures (Demos, 2009). Faced with increased pressure on core funding for teaching from government, and a growing student population demanding
a greater quality of academic services, new flexible opportunities for learning and teaching must
therefore be considered (Phillips, 2009). This presentation will consider how learning technologies, such
as Echo360, have the potential to transform existing teaching practices and dramatically alter the
context of university courses in a global learning environment. |

Nottingham Case Study: Simplifying Lecture Recording
Presenter: Sally Hanford, Audio-visual Media Development Officer, Information Services,
The University of Nottingham
Description: We found that it was important to lecturers that they have full control of the recording
process and camera angle. Using an AMX control interface with which lecturers were already familiar, touch screen buttons were programmed to record, pause and end the recording and control the
camera. To optimise the room environment for video capture, the ‘record’ button was programmed
to trigger additional lighting and start an electronic ‘RECORDING’ warning sign. |
